How digital communication is used for educational purposes

digital - data expressed in 0s and 1s (how a computer communicates all information) as opposed to analogue

communication - the imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium

educational - intending to or serving to educate (both formally and informally)

purposes - the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists

This dot point in the syllabus refers to the various ways we can communicate via a computer to impart or exchange information for the purpose of educating and learning. You will need to understand the variety of ways we can use digital devices to communicate for educational purposes, how these are used to educate, and why you might choose one communication over another.

Social Media platforms

Some social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook are a great way for peers to communicate with each other and learn from each other. They provide an opportunity for like-minded people to share information including articles, videos and individual opinions. Information provided is driven by individuals contributing ideas to the group and learnt through the discussion that ensues. Sometimes, the discussions lead to catching up in person to discuss further.

Learning Management Systems

A learning management system (LMS) is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of educational courses or training programs. Some examples of LMSs that you may be familiar with are Google Classroom and Seqta. Learning Management Systems allow educators to communicate with students through:

  • posting information about learning tasks to learners
  • distribute assessments and communicate feedback/results
  • allowing educators and students to converse through comments
  • avenues to access external resources

The key advantage of using a CMS is that it is an easy way for an educator to manage and collaborate with a large group of learners.

Massively Open Online Communities (MOOCs)

Email is a digital communication tool that can be used for educational purposes. It provides an avenue for learners to communicate with educators. It provides:

  • an opportunity for learners to clarify and ask questions with educators
  • educators to distribute information to learners

The key advantage of email is that it is a direct avenue for the educator and the learner to communicate.
