Purpose of data organisation

Definition

purpose - the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists
data - information in digital form that can be transmitted or processed
organisation - the act or process of organising or of being organised

Once you create, gather, or start manipulating if(!is_null($row->qualified_keyword)) { $keyword_to_use = $row->qualified_keyword; } else { $keyword_to_use = $row->keyword; } information in digital form that can be transmitted or processed and files, they can quickly become disorganised. To save time and prevent errors later on, you and your colleagues should decide how you will name and structure files and folders. Including documentation (or 'metadata') will allow you to add context to your data so that you and others can understand it in the short, medium, and long-term.

Common file formats for graphics and audio

Definition

common - occurring, found, or done often
file format - defines the structure and type of data stored in a file
graphic - an image or visual representation of an object (displayed on a computer screen)
audio - sound, especially when recorded, transmitted, or reproduced

Vector vs Raster

With all of the image options and file formats out there, it can be a little overwhelming when you are choosing what file type to use (and send to clients). Compatibility is always a concern when you are working with different file types, but when it comes to graphics and images the type of computer graphic format you use is essential to how the image renders.

Vector graphics

Vector graphics are created from points, lines, shapes and curves that are based on mathematical formulas. These elements are filled with color, blends, tints or gradients, and lines have a stroke attribute such as a solid or dashed line with different thicknesses and colors.

Computer graphics metafile (.cgm)

  • CGM files are a free and open image file format, that stores primarily vector data.
  • They are used in many Computer Aided Drawing (CAD) appications.

Scalable vector graphic (.svg)

  • SVG files are primarily used by web browsers to display vector images.
  • Developed by the World Wide Web Consortium
  • Supports animation & interactivity

Raster Graphics

Raster graphics use pixels (small dots or squares of color) to create an overall image. A raster graphic is also referred to as a bitmap file.

management - the process of dealing with or controlling things or people
data - information in digital form that can be transmitted or processed
sort - a spreadsheet function that arranges data systematically e.g. lexicographical order, chronological order
filter - a spreadsheet function that removes unwanted data before displaying the results to the user e.g. filter out any products that are no longer in stock
